After the full-chest graphics, after the moon and the graffiti and the cigar and the chain, this one pulls back entirely. A small Ape Head, upper chest, centre. Below it, in Old English blackletter: "World Gone Mad." That is the complete graphic. Nothing else on the front of the garment.

The typeface choice is doing the primary work. Old English blackletter — the script derived from medieval manuscript tradition, adopted by West Coast Californian tattoo culture, by chicano lowrider culture, by prison calligraphy, by the mastheads of newspapers that wanted to project permanence and authority — carries a specific gravity that modern sans-serif or even graffiti lettering cannot replicate. It is a typeface that has been used to write things that were meant to last. "World Gone Mad" in this script is not a casual observation. It is a statement made in the most durable handwriting available, which implies that whoever wrote it intends for the assessment to stand.

White base renders the print in deep forest green — the colour of old money, of institutional permanence, of private school blazers and establishment crests — which puts the statement in a particular ironic frame. The most anti-establishment slogan, written in the most establishment script, printed in the most establishment colour. Black base renders the same print in fluorescent yellow, which removes the irony and replaces it with urgency: the yellow reads as a warning, the same yellow used on caution tape and hazard signage, which is its own interpretation of the phrase.
